Liveness Detection
Liveness detection is what makes remote, selfie-based identity verification trustworthy. In a KYC flow, the customer's selfie is matched to their ID document, and liveness confirms the selfie comes from a real person physically present at capture, not a spoof.
Liveness can be passive (analysing a single capture for signs of life) or active (asking the user to blink or turn their head). As deepfake attacks grow more sophisticated, robust liveness is increasingly central to fraud prevention at onboarding.
Key points
- Defends against photo, replay, mask, and deepfake attacks
- Pairs with face match to bind a person to their ID document
- Passive or active depending on assurance level required
- Increasingly critical as synthetic-identity fraud rises
