What Is Document Verification

The First Test of a Genuine Identity

Document verification is the process of confirming that an identity document is authentic, unaltered and belongs to the person presenting it. It is the bedrock of identity verification and KYC — if the document is forged, every downstream check is built on sand.

One Constellation inspects each document in real time for the security features genuine IDs carry — fonts, layouts, holograms, microprint, and the machine-readable zone (MRZ) — and flags tampering, photo substitution and template forgeries. Data is extracted with OCR and cross-checked for internal consistency, then passed straight into biometric and screening steps.

Capabilities

Document Checks That Catch Forgeries

Real-time authentication and data extraction for thousands of document types worldwide.

📄

Authenticity & Tamper Checks

Inspect security features, fonts, layout and holographic elements to detect forged or altered documents.

🔎

MRZ & Barcode Validation

Read and validate the machine-readable zone and barcodes, cross-checking against printed data.

🔡

OCR Data Extraction

Auto-extract name, date of birth, document number and expiry — no manual re-keying.

🧾

Photo-Substitution Detection

Detect swapped or manipulated ID photographs before they reach face match.

🌍

190+ Country Coverage

Support thousands of passport, ID-card, licence and permit templates globally.

🔌

API & SDK Integration

Drop document capture and verification into any flow with REST APIs and mobile SDKs.

How It Works

How a Document Is Verified

1

Capture

The document is photographed via guided web or mobile capture, with quality and glare checks at the point of capture.

2

Classify

The system identifies the document type and country to apply the correct template and security-feature rules.

3

Authenticate

Security features, fonts, MRZ and tamper signals are inspected in real time to confirm genuineness.

4

Extract & Hand Off

Validated data is extracted and passed to biometric match and screening — see Identity Verification.

Why It Matters

Why Real-Time Document Verification Matters

🛡️

Block Forged IDs

Catch tampered, fake and substituted documents before onboarding completes.

⚡

Remove Manual Review

Automated authentication and OCR replace slow, error-prone human checks.

🎯

Cut False Rejections

Smart capture and classification reduce genuine users wrongly failed.

⚖️

Evidence on File

Document images and check results are retained for audit and dispute resolution.

Regulation

What Regulators Expect From Document Checks

No major AML regime prescribes a particular technology, but they converge on the same test. FATF Recommendation 10 requires firms to verify a customer's identity using reliable, independent source documents, data or information. The UK Money Laundering Regulations 2017 (regulation 28) and Singapore's MAS Notice 626 apply the same standard, and the US Customer Identification Program rule lets banks verify identity through documents, non-documentary methods or both — see database verification.

Where onboarding happens remotely, regulators also expect firms to manage the higher risk of non-face-to-face relationships, typically by pairing document authentication with biometric checks or an additional independent data source. FATF's 2020 Guidance on Digital Identity explains how the assurance levels of digital identity systems map to these customer due diligence requirements.

Two practical consequences follow. First, a firm must be able to show how a document was judged genuine, not just that it was accepted, so check results and images belong in the customer record — kept for at least five years under FATF Recommendation 11, longer where local law requires. Second, a document check is one control within customer due diligence, not the whole of it: screening, risk assessment and ongoing monitoring still apply.

Fraud Patterns

The Document Fraud Patterns Checks Must Catch

Document fraud falls into a handful of patterns, and each one needs a different layer of checks.

🖨️

Counterfeit Documents

Entirely fabricated IDs, often built from templates sold online. Caught by comparing fonts, layout and security features with the genuine template for that document type and issuing country.

✏️

Altered Genuine Documents

A real document with changed data, such as a new date of birth or expiry date. Caught by tamper checks and by cross-checking the printed data against the MRZ, whose check digits are calculated from the original values.

🖼️

Photo Substitution

A genuine document with the holder's photograph replaced. Caught by photo-substitution detection, then by matching the document photo to the customer's live face.

🎭

Impostors With Real Documents

A genuine, unaltered document used by someone other than its owner, such as a lost or stolen passport. Document checks alone cannot catch this; it takes biometric face match and liveness — see identity verification.

FAQ

Document Verification FAQ

What is document verification?+
Document verification confirms that an identity document — such as a passport, ID card or driver's licence — is genuine, unaltered and valid, by inspecting its security features and validating the data it contains.
What documents can be verified?+
Passports, national identity cards, driver's licences and residence permits across 190+ countries and thousands of templates.
Does it detect fake or edited documents?+
Yes. The system checks security features, fonts, layout, the MRZ and tamper signals to detect forged, altered and photo-substituted documents.
Is document verification enough on its own?+
No. Document verification proves the document is genuine; pairing it with biometric liveness proves the right person is presenting it. Both are part of full identity verification.
What is the machine-readable zone (MRZ)?+
The MRZ is the two or three lines of code at the bottom of a passport or ID card's data page, defined by ICAO Doc 9303. It repeats key data — name, document number, nationality, date of birth and expiry — with check digits, so printed data that has been altered without matching the MRZ can be detected.
Can a photo of an ID document be used for remote onboarding?+
In most regimes, yes — provided the firm can show the check is reliable and that non-face-to-face risk is managed, usually by authenticating the document image and matching it to a live selfie with liveness detection. Reading the passport chip or adding database checks raises assurance further.
What happens if a genuine customer's document fails?+
Most failures come from image quality — glare, blur or a cropped edge — rather than fraud. Well-designed flows prompt a recapture first and send unresolved cases to manual review, so genuine customers are not declined automatically.
